Meet Judge Chu
Nick Chu is Judge of the recently-created Probate Court No. 2. Prior to taking office, he served our community for 6 years as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 5. Judge Chu is the son of immigrants and was the first Asian American Justice of the Peace in Texas history. He is recognized as a leader in the judiciary, having created programs that divert people away from the criminal justice system for low-level offenses and increased access to justice by implementing a program where people unable to pay for an attorney can receive legal assistance at no cost. Judge Chu also has a long history of service within the Democratic Party.
About the Court
Probate Court No. 2 has primary jurisdiction over mental health cases in Travis County and shares jurisdiction with Probate Court No. 1 in probate, guardianship, and eminent domain matters. The Court was created by the Legislature at the county’s request to meet the demands of Travis County’s growing population.
Judge Chu was unanimously appointed to serve as the inaugural judge for this new court by the Travis County Commissioners Court, citing his experience and highly favorable reputation in the judiciary, the progressive reforms he instituted in his prior judicial office, and recommendations from community leaders. He is running to remain Probate Judge and is seeking a full four-year term in the March 2024 Democratic Primary.
